What are some basic Keyword Research Tips?

Once you have chosen the niche for your web-site or blog, the next step is to determine what keywords, or key phrases to use. There are two basic ways to determine which are the best keywords to use:

1. Brainstorming: Think of the terms or phrases used to describe your passion, products or services, also include related words you may use to describe a characteristic feature.
2. Do some online keyword research: There are various online services offering keyword research of competitive sites, free sites such as Google Adwords, Kwmap.net, seed keywords engine, just to name a few. One of the best on-line keyword research products we have purchased for a minimal fee is “Market Samurai“, well worth the money.

Brainstorming keywords can be a good way to get a head start on optimizing your website, but you also need to put in a bit of effort using the keyword research tools to identify the keywords that will give your site the greatest marketing impact, to out rank your competitors with the search engines.

Some other Keyword Research Tips to consider are:

What Keywords does Your Competition Use?

It can sometimes be quite beneficial to use the same keywords your competition does in order to come up on the search page at the same time, this will give a potential customer the choice between your company and another. Just make sure you have the edge over your competition and give the customer the relevant information they require, make sure your site is the one they choose.

To check out your competitor’s top keywords, there are various sites you can visit, such as Theme Zoom Gladius, SpyFu, GoogSpy, just to name a few, there are many more on-line, most of them free.

What keywords doesn’t Your Competition Use?

There may be a great marketing opportunity if you utilize the relative keywords your competitors are not using. By using less popular keywords, or long tail keywords the competition is not as high and you can easily rank for the less popular words, as in most cases others are concentrating only on the most popular combination’s.

The most popular keywords are the most expensive in a pay-per-click advertising campaign, because of the demand, it pushes up the keyword value.  For example, when you do a Google search on  Car Insurance, you will find that the bigger companies hold the top rankings and are very hard to compete with, as they have huge marketing budgets. If you use a long tail keyword, the competition is less,  it is far easier to achieve the top search ranking with a long tail keyword or phrase than with a more popular, highly competitive one.

Check your Website Statistics

Another great keyword research tool at your disposal is the statistics of your website. Your web host or software compiles valuable information which enable’s you to track your visits.  This way you can regularly check what keywords or phrases are working and how people are reaching or finding your web-site , and from what source, for example a social media site.

Lets say, your Internet Business is selling Weight Loss Books and you’ve included lots of articles and links with the keywords “Weight Loss Books”. When you review the statistics, you find that quite a lot of visitors are getting to your site with the phrase “Low Calorie Diet”, this very important information enables to leverage this keyword and increase traffic to your site, which is very good for your business.

Keyword research is a vital component to the success of any Internet Marketing Business and by focusing on the ones which result in the highest number of conversions, your business will reap the rewards.  I hope these Keyword Research Tips are very helpful and you can utilize them in becoming a successful Internet Marketer.

Happy Hunting!

Spying on competitors feels a little uncomfortable, is it ethical? Is it something I just need to get over?

Hi Wal,

The thing i found hard at first with Internet Marketing was putting yourself out there, building a profile and sharing personal information. As my confidence grew i thought what the hell, lets give it a really good go….
